The big ugly “C” word – Cancer. I am sure we all have been touched by cancer in one way or another, most of us either know someone who is currently fighting their battle with cancer or know someone who has lost their battle with cancer… I too have been touched…
This year I decided to donate my time and talent by photographing this wonderful event. This is an auction and fundraiser for the Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana’s programs and services for women with breast cancer. This event is co-hosted by Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana and the Fort Wayne Derby Girls, the event is held at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art
Here are the lovely ladies welcoming attendees.
This event was so beautifully decorated with bows and pretty pink everywhere!
Attendees spent the first thirty minutes or so in the lobby, mingling with friends, old and new, enjoying appetizers from The Lantern, cupcakes decorated accordingly, and a cash bar.
This is Amber Recker and Nicole from WMEE 97.3 Morning Show. This was my first time meeting Amber and it is obvious that she has a huge passion for this event and a huge heart for those affected by cancer. Amber Recker is a former Derby Girl , is the director of marketing at Punch Films and has a gourmet ice cream business with her husband called The Ginger Kitchen – she is one busy lady!
Then attendees entered a private room where the beautiful auction busts’ were displayed. Every year several breast cancer survivors have their busts cast, then local artists donated their time and talent to design them. The artists get an opportunity to get-to-know the survivor of the bust they are designing – it is interesting to see what kind of “creation” they create based on either the survivors breast cancer story or as simple as what the survivors’ favorite color is. The busts are not limited to paper mache/plaster, metals, glass and other mediums are used. Some of the busts are free-standing and some are on a custom stand or frame so that the entire decorative piece can be displayed or hung. Here the News Sentinel details the process for the survivor and artist.
What an easy way for our local artists to support and raise awareness for Breast Cancer – if you are an artist I would encourage you to do your part and participate! We CAN make a difference!
I, of course, LOVED all of the busts… but one did “stand out” – the bust created with Tea Cups, so very cute! The Glo Magazine of Fort Wayne featured this bust on their cover this month, they were the sponsor of this bust.
Live auctions are always fun, especially when you know that the money is going to directly to the needs of those with breast cancer! Many of the artists and survivors bid against each other during the auction… this made for quite an exciting night! This auction was full of energy and life!
After the auction there is time for the attendees to get a photograph of the artist, survivor, and bust.
It was fun to see a crowd of “paparazzi” form! These survivors are proud of their beautiful and unique busts(this time not referring to the ones created by artists)!
Local artists, creating one-of-a-kind artwork for a wonderful cause!
It has been a pleasure and joy to partner with Amber, Cancer Services and Derby Girls! I was able to enjoy time with old friends and make a few new ones!
Thank you for this opportunity to photograph and support this cause!
